After her education at the University of Manchester, Britton left the United Kingdom in 1936 to take up a position in a girl's school in South Africa. While living in South Africa, Britton married and worked as a journalist in Port Elizabeth. While on a trip to the United States, Britton was offered a position at the University of Adelaide and she migrated with her husband and their three children. Best known for her stage adaptations, Britton has also written more than 20 plays of her own although most have not been staged. Her unpublished play Somehow the Time Passes (1970) won an Honourable Mention at the 1st Australian National Playwrights' Conference.
