Sylvia Emmerton worked as a primary teacher at Shalom Christian College, a school for Indigenous children in Thuringowa. When Emmerton found she had breast cancer, she began to develop her writing skills. In 2002, Emmerton entered her stories into Black Ink's inaugural national Indigenous writing and illustrating competition, which she won, and her story was developed into the publication My Mob, Going to the Beach
(q.v.).
