The Children's Book Awards were introduced in 1982 and sponsored by the New Zealand Government Printer, with the aim of providing recognition for New Zealand children's books and their writers and illustrators. AIM Toothpaste took over sponsorship from 1990-1996 inclusive, in 1997 New Zealand Post became the sponsors.
Awards are made in four categories: Young Adult Fiction, Junior Fiction, Non-fiction, Picture Book. Five finalists are selected for each category and from these a winner in each category is selected.

It's the school holidays and Terry is bored and lonely. The only thing he enjoys doing is watching television. But one winter's day, as he begins to receive strange messages on his video set, Terry realises he isn't alone. Somebody or something, is trying to get his attention, and with the aid of a new friend, he pieces together the messages from the alien Visitors.
