winner form The Salt Maiden Donna Cameron , Peter Grayling (composer), 2002 single work drama radio play 'The Salt Maiden is a poetic and erotic retelling of the ancient story, traditional in many cultures, about the love for a mermaid by a human being. Rana, a mysterious young woman moves to an island knowing that in order to get to work each day she will be forced to catch the ferry across the strait, in so doing she hopes to conquer her growing fear of drowning. Russ, the ferryman, mistaking her terror for sexual tension falls in love with her. Unbeknown to either of them Rana is employed to care for Russ' crippled, senile Grandmother who is obsessed with a tragedy from her past. With each trip across the water the three characters are pulled closer together until memory and myth, past and present merge shockingly into one.' http://www.abc.net.au/rn/arts/airplay/s1303415.htm (Sighted 07/03/05).
