Brij Lal has taught at the Universities of the South Pacific, of Papua New Guinea and of Hawaii, and at the Australian National University (as Professor of Pacific Islands History). He served as a member of the Fiji Constitution Review Commission 1995-1996, and was elected Fellow of the Australian Humanities Academy in 1996.
