As a student Carol Novack edited the University of Rochester's literary magazine in the United States. After a few years living in Australia, Novack returned to New York, where she worked as a lawyer and studied for a Masters degree in social work. She also co-edited the journal Ploughman, as well as editing Mad Hatter's Review.
