Neilsen holds a Ph.D. from The University of Queensland, where he also began his teaching career. In 1996, he founded the creative writing program at the Queensland University of Technology, where he is Adjunct Professor in the Creative Industries faculty. He has been a novelist, short story writer and editor but has been primarily interested in poetry, which has been published in several journals and anthologies. Neilsen has also been chairman of Brisbane's Warana Writer's Week. He was the editor of Dotlit: the on-line journal of creative writing.
