Notes

  • 'The author adapted the community story, as told to her by Western Arrernte elder, Trudi Inkamala, to fit it into the rationale of the HAR. The songs at the end of the book, which recount the story 'Big Man Grab Sister' can be used to teach vocabulary, pronunciation and aspects of Standard Australian English such as the third person /s/, for example 'takes, hides'. There are 5 pages of activities for the readers to do, once they have read the book. ' (Source: shop.acer.edu.au)
  • 'The original editions of Honey Ant Readers embrace features of AE [Aboriginal English] so that students are able to learn to read in the language they speak in the playground. The language of these HARs gradually moves into SAE [Standard Australian English] according to the natural order in which speakers of other languages are believed to acquire the grammatical structures of Standard English.'
