In this essay, the author describes how she chanced to meet her best female friend, who had gone missing for three years, in a small town in the mountains outside suburban Melbourne. The author's friend was deserted by her ex-husband and lost custody of her child. Disillusioned with love and friendship, she chose to live a secluded life.
