The poem is a 'monologue' about a longer narrative poem of the author's titled 'Dno' (The Rock-floor), apparently not yet published in full anywhere. According to the Author's note appended to Wiersze zebrane, fragments of 'Dno' appeared in the postwar Polish expatriate, Paris-based monthly Kultura in 1956-57. 'Monolog' comments on the process of writing 'Dno'. The poem's tone is hard to gauge, but appears bleak. The Polish word 'dno' can also mean 'rock-bottom' or 'the pits', and clearly carries this meaning here as well as the literal 'floor'.
