  • Epigraph: 'The first V.A.D. to go from Queensland, who died at Manchester last Sunday.'
  • During World War I, thousands of women throughout the British Empire joined the Voluntary Aid Detachment. Although not qualified nurses, the V.A.D.s were trained in first aid, and performed a range of basic nursing and hospital orderly duties.
