AbstractHistoryArchive Description

'At the age of five, after years of abuse, and just months after the death of her father, Robyn was sent on a ‘holiday’ and was never returned to her family. She waited at the gate for her mother to return but it soon dawned on her that her family was not coming to get her. This is Robyn’s story. From humble and sometimes horrific beginnings Robyn became one of Australia’s leading fashion and textile designers and an accomplished artist. In Waiting at the Gate Robyn transforms her life and comes back from the brink of despair to rebuild her life.' (Source: Publisher's website)

Notes

  • Dedication:
    Dedicated to my children,
my families, Bob and my friends
    and
to all the children of the world
in the hope that they can find
    their voice and tell.
  • Epigraph:
One of the things we do as a country is pull down people, of if anyone tells their story or celebrates their story, then somehow it's seen as big-noting. I think one of the things that we as a nation should do more of is to actually celebrate the narrative of the individual because the narrative of a whole nation is made up by our personal stories.

When I think of Australia I think of it as an amazing mosaic of tiles, billions of tiles, some of them shiny, some of them green, some of them blue, some of them black, some of them are latge, some of them small, all part of our national narrative, and the tile of Robyn Caughlan is beautiful. It's deep. It's shiny and it's creative. It tells the story of a woman who has struggled. It tells the story of a woman who makes beautiful things. It tells the story of a woman who has humility as the very essence of who she is...
