Editor's note: Chief Petty Officer Ray Parkin (1910-2005) was a career sailor on board the HMAS Perth when she was sunk by the Japanese at Sunda Strait in 1942. He survived the shipwreck to endure the remainder of the war as a POW, transferred from Changi to work on the Burma Railway in Thailand in 1943.
