Editor's note:Journalist and poet AB 'Banjo' Paterson (1864-1941) helped build the legend of the bushman and a ruggedly sentimental idea of outback Australia that still survives in story and song. Paterson once wrote that the army only tolerated him as a correspondent because he could help them with their horses, and here he writes beautifully about cavalry on the move towards the defeat of the Boers at Pretoria in June 1900
