Editor's note: Almost 2500 Australian volunteers served in the Invasion of Waikato (1863-1864) to suppress Maori insurrection in New Zealand. The quartermaster of 12th Regiment, Robert Laver (birth and death unknown), formerly captain and brigade adjunct of the NSW Vlunteer Rifles, wrote a letter to the Sydney Morning Herald, giving his account of the attack on Maori positions at Rangiriri in November 1863.
