The most significant West German science fiction series of the 1950s and 1960s, Terra was first published by Munich-based publisher Arthur Moewig in 1957. Initially known as Terra: Utopische Romane Science Fiction it was later renamed Terra SF. At that time Moewig managed to poach a number of creatives from competitor Pabel, including editor/author Walter Ernsting, editor Günther M. Schelwokat and cover painter Johnny Bruck. In September 1962 Terra SF was supplemented by the reprint series Terra Extra. From that date onward Terra SF and Terra Extra were published in weekly rotation. In 1968 both series were combined into the new weekly series Terra Nova, which later was replaced by Terra Astra.

A Rim Worlds story based around the adventures of Derek Calver, The Rim of Space sees Chandler's hero determined to join the Rim Runners in their exploration of desolate planets. He joins the crew of Lorn Lady and sets forth for Mellise, a planet inhabited by intelligent amphibians. He later visits Groller, where the natives have just qualified as humanoids; Stree, with its tea-loving lizards; and Tharn, the home of a pre-industrial civilization.

The Deep Reaches of Space has undisguised autobiographical elements in having as its protagonist a seaman turned science-fiction writer who travels to the future and uses his nautical experience to save a party of humans stranded on an alien planet. Chandler also has as his central character George Whitely, the name he occasionally used as a pseudonym.

After an injection of lysergic acid, Whitely finds himself inhabiting the body of Peter Quinn, Second Officer of the interstellar liner Lode Maiden. His mind, however, is still that of his former self. When a magnetic storm throws the spaceship into the deep reaches of space Quinn's body somehow retains enough knowledge to help Whitely land the ship on an unnamed planed on the Galactic Rim...
