AbstractHistoryArchive Description

In 1842 the Attorney General charged Edward Alcock, printer and publisher of the Colonial Observer newspaper, with publishing a libel against the administration of justice in the colony. The libel appeared in a leader 'The Late Executions for Piracy' published in the Colonial Observer (30 November, 1842). The court case took place in January 1843 and was reported in the newspapers of the time including in the Colonial Observer itself. This column, of 28 January 1843, summarises the outcome of the case and refers to attacks on the Observer's reputation by the Sydney Morning Herald. Articles reporting the case were published during January in the Colonial Observer also under the title 'Our Ex Officio Case'. These columns are not separately indexed.
