Independent Productions pre-sold the first series of Butterfly Island to a US cable network and to the BBC, as a means of off-setting the enormous costs of location shooting. Similar sales were made with series two.

- Series one was filmed on Brampton Island, Port Douglas, and MacKay, for a cost of $1.6 million (for an eleven-week shoot). Series two was filmed in the Whitsundays and on Sydney's northern beaches, for a cost of $3.2 million.
