Independent Productions pre-sold the first series of Butterfly Island to a US cable network and to the BBC, as a means of off-setting the enormous costs of location shooting. Similar sales were made with series two.

According to Moran, 15 July 1985 (ABC TV, series one), 20 April 1987 (Seven Network, series two). Series three aired in 1993 (outside Moran's scope).

Location:

  • Series one was filmed on Brampton Island, Port Douglas, and MacKay, for a cost of $1.6 million (for an eleven-week shoot). Series two was filmed in the Whitsundays and on Sydney's northern beaches, for a cost of $3.2 million.
