Argues that by the early 1960s science fiction writers had become complacent, recycling with minor modifications a small number of tropes and ideas. But with the emergence of the New Age Movement, inspired in part by the Vietnam War, there was a retreat from Enlightenment science and values, and speculative fiction was reinvigorated.
