The writer states there is 'none of the poetry of life' in northern Australian towns, that the dishonest often rise to, and abuse, positions of power, and that such towns offer little to those who seek 'refinement and cheerful social intercourse'. Thus, he states, it is no wonder that they turn to alcohol as a safety valve.
