Twilight Tales started as a weekly reading event held at Chicago's Red Lion Pub. Writers from the greater Chicago area and periodic visitors would take to the stage every Monday night spotlighting both published and unpublished authors of all genres. In 1998 the group began a series of illustrated chapbooks, published under the variant titles Twilight Tales, Twilight Tales Presents, and Twilight Tales the Reading Series Presents. Many of the stories included in these anthologies made their public debut at the reading series, some in the form of first drafts or works in progress.
Only seven issues of Twilight Tales were released between 1998 and 1999. Each included its own themed subtitle. These included (in no particular order): "Tales of Forbidden Passion," "Strange Creatures," "When the Bough Breaks," "Tales from the Pet Shop," "Play it Again Sam" and "Dangerous Dames."
