Inspired by the attack on, and subsequent death of, Melbourne woman, Maria Korp. Korp's husband, Joe, and his mistress, Tania Herman, were charged with attempted murder. Herman was convicted and sentenced to twelve years in jail; Joe Korp committed suicide on the day of his wife's funeral.

The opera, with music by a leading figure of the classical music avant-garde, Richard Meale, and libretto by acclaimed novelist and poet, David Malouf, was conceived in the period leading up to the Bicentennial celebrations in 1988.
