The writer describes as true the story of Mary, a young woman convict who escapes in a boat with three men convicts. They travel 2000 miles from Port Jackson to Cape York where the men die but Mary is captured by Aboriginal people. She is found 23 years later.

This column is probably a retelling of the story which appears in: Australian Life Digest 1 June 1938 (pp.73-77) but called '"Me Um White Mary" : A White Woman Held Prisoner by the Blacks of the North for 36 Years' which was reprinted from the Cornhill Magazine.
