Notes

  • This poem was written for the wife of Kendall's mentor and friend J.Sheridan Moore (q.v.). Prior to her marriage, as Flora Harris, she had been a professional vocalist.
  • This poem appears to have remained unpublished until its inclusion in Reed (1966). Reed's source was the MS, then in his possession. According to Reed, Kendall referred to compositional issues he had with this poem in a letter to N.D. Stenhouse dated 7 February 1866, which suggests that it dates from about that date.
