  • This poem initially appeared in the Empire in October 1860 with the author's name indicated as Basil E. Kendall. It was subsequently published in the Illawarra Mercury in May 1861, with the author attributed as Henry Kendall. Both versions are almost identical with the exception of small differences in punctuation, contraction and typeface.
