Notes

  • Note that Kendall wrote two different poems that came to be known by the title 'Sitting by the Fire' (both of which appeared in different versions). This earlier poem, which appears in Poems and Songs, is a different work to the one that appears in Leaves from Australian Forests.
  • The expanded version of this poem appears to have been first published in Bell's Life in Sydney in December 1861, where it appeared with the original sub-title.
