The Past Doctor Adventures (PDA) was a series of paperback novel launched by BBC Books in 1997 in conjunction with its Eighth Doctor Adventures line. This series featured new adventures of the first seven Doctors, with the exception of three releases (see note below). Both series ended in 2005 when BBC Books decided to focus its publishing ventures on books related to the revived TV series. Although there was speculation that the PDA line would later resume with novels featuring the Eighth Doctor and even Ninth Doctor, as of 2009 this has not eventuated.

The three novels that do not focus on the first seven regenerations of the Doctor are Scream of the Shalka (a novelisation of a webcast story featuring the 'Shalka' Doctor); The Infinity Doctors (featuring an unspecified Doctor); and The Face of the Enemy (featuring The Master). One of the last novels, Fear Itself, was the only PDA title featuring the Eighth Doctor, which acknowledged the coming of the Ninth Doctor on television.

The 'Shalka' Doctor, as the variant of the Doctor in Scream of the Shalka is known, was originally understood to be the ninth regeneration of the Doctor (the Ninth Doctor). However, when the series was revived on television in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston as the canonical Ninth Doctor, the 'Shalka' Doctor was shunted into the role of an alternative version of the Doctor.

From 2006 through until March 2009 the baton of past Doctor adventures was carried by the Short Trips series. This short-story collection was published by Big Finish Productions (which had previously been associated with the Doctor Who franchise through its audio dramas).
