Notes

  • Author's note: 'Expired without a sigh' is from Charles Darwin's letter to Emma, April 23, 1851. Emma was heavily pregnant with another child when Annie died and was not able to be with her daughter alongside Charles. Born in 1808 as Emma Wedgwood, Emma had ten children between 1839 and 1856, the last born when she was 48 years old.
