AbstractHistoryArchive Description

The story is about the experiences of villagers during two wars from 1948 to 1975, when the population was torn between two ideologies, giving rise to political suppression and assassinations, as well as struggles against nature. The many deaths in the story caused by the victims’ own relatives, including brothers on opposing sides, are used as a metaphor for civil war. Circumstances of agony, hatred, dogmatic beliefs and revenge are described to present the absurdities of the war.

Notes

  • English translation of the title: The Sounds of Tocsins at Night
  • Tocsins were used as warning signals to inform villagers about thieves, fire, flood or public events.
