Claiming most fairytales are inadequate, Lower gives an example of what he regards as a good fairy story. Jack, a retired tram guard, is offered half a kingdom and half the king's youngest daughter if he can remove a spell from Princess Maggie, who has been turned into an S. P. bookmaker. He sets out to find the witch who cast the spell, but receives a better offer and lives happily ever after, despite being turned into a teetotaller.
