'Port Adelaide became a focal point for the resettlement of Aboriginal people leaving missions, or displaced from traditional lands. The transition from rural to urban environments, in Port Adelaide as elsewhere, took place with minimal support from indifferent governments. This made it necessary for Aboriginal people residing in Port Adelaide to set up their own support systems relying on long established cultural practices.
Aboriginal voices calls on social memory to tell of the ways in which a range of Aboriginal individuals and groups created a community with innovative and successful organisations, in what was often a hostile environment.
Recording peoples' stories, particularly those that tell about the ways people have got together and made things happen for themselves and their communities, cam inform the next generation and suggest future community actions.' (Source: Publisher's blurb)
