John Mason, in debt to a bookmaker, is relieved when his uncle dies. However he cannot find his legacy hidden in his father's shop and so flees on a ship to Suva. A shipwreck leaves him alone and starving on a deserted island where he now discovers to his horror that the tins of prunes washed up are tins of gold coins.
