Author note: "'The Deadshits' was written in 1974. My brother-in-law at the time was a bikie. He came home one night making some of the comments I made in the poem. Few people have liked the poem, or admit to it anyway. I do like it. Since writing it, I have often been in positions where I've almost had to apologise for not being a pack rapist. In fact I'm not. But I don't see what it has to do with the merits of the poem, as a study of sexism as well as of class conflict."(Cover of The Wild Girl in the Heart)
