An injured sailor is put ashore to recover in the care of a German naturalist. He is horrified to find the naturalist is embalming human heads, which he ships to Europe. Becke then relates an experience of his own, in which he assisted in transporting seventeen decapitated heads back to their village after a raid by rebels.
