AbstractHistoryArchive Description
In the time before Queensland was a State, the narrator, a 'new chum', joins Steve the Poacher, a convict released to a sheep station, on a duck-hunting outing. This story about an encounter with an imaginary bunyip is a charming study of the colonial vernacular, for example: 'skeared' [scared], 'ketched' [caught], 'summut' [something], 'airthquake' [earthquake].
