This occasional column was introduced to the Tasmanian Mail in 1899.The Editor explained its purpose as follows: '[A]cting on a suggestion, we propose to submit each week a sonnet or or other poetical passage from a French author of repute, and to invite competetitive translations from such of our readers as care to join in the exercise of wits ...'. Simple conditions for the competitors were imposed relating to the mode of translation and poetic features such as rhyme and metre.
