  • J. W. Mackail, Professor of Poetry at Oxford University, wrote in an introductory note: 'It is also all but the first serious contribution made from the Dominions towards the central movement of English poetry. It belongs to a school or tradition which has been prominent in that poetry since the Middle Ages, and from which most of the verse now being written is in sharp and turbulent reaction. Here it once more reasserts its potency.' (v - vi)
  • Epigraph: Extract from two verses beginning 'And they made compact with me,' from Bardesanes, The Hmyn of the Robe of Glory (Mead's translation.)
