Notes

  • Epigraph: "Is is not something more than fantasy? / What think you of it?' Hamlet: Act I; Scene I.
  • In a footnote that Author explains that the poem was written on the anniversary of his daughter's 'great illness and unexpected reprieve'. The daughter (Alice) was away from home when the poem was written, 'but the remembrance of her most imminent peril, just the year before, brought her image ... very near to her Parent's heart'.
