Notes

  • Epigraph: 'The Squire by whom this display was begun, / Evinced little haste that his Work should be done; / Now fitted the halter, now traversed the cart, / And often took leave, but seem'd loth to depart! / Derry down, down, hey derry down.' Matthew Prior: Ballad of the Thief and Cordelier.
  • Dedication: To Major Jeffery, Her Majesty's 88th Regiment, or the Connaught Rangers, etc, as a mark of good-will and respect from his affectionate cousin, Molesworth Jeffery.
  • The text is divided into two sections. The first section comprises a preface, a selection of poems and a concluding note ('Exeuendo') on page 64. The second section comprises an Appendix (containing 'Private Memorandums' and Notes on sundry entries in volumes One, Two and Three) and an addtional three poems which Jeffery claims 'may almost be designated "The Author's Biography"'.
