Upon the death of both his parents Dickie is "imported by blackmail" from America by his four spinster aunts who live in Eolian, a fictitious town in Far North Queensland. His aunts renege on allowing him to attend a picnic when they learn that the location, 'the old Hulk', is owned by the 'Sanitary Boy'. Dickie constantly misbehaves following this revelation until his wit wins back permission to attend.Note: Illustrated by D'Alton Valentine.

The Actress Next Door,

A young boy, Dickie, wants to invite the 'Sanitary Boy' to his birthday party. However, because of racial and class prejudices his four aunts won't allow him to do so. The eponymous actress next door, Miss Fleurice Marrete, devises a scheme to allow 'Sanitary Boy' to attend. All goes according to plan and 'Sanitary Boy' leaves the party content and clutching the best present of all: 'a shining mouth organ.'

When Dickie, aged six years, blows up the 'Ladies' Aid cake' on the Fourth of July he is severely admonished by his four aunts. The orphaned boy pines for his native America and decides to run away. However, his plan is thwarted aboard ship by his aunts, who are upset because he left them. He decides to atone for his callous behaviour and buys them a Valentine's card each.
