The British Way was conceived by Lindsay as a series of novels 'which would deal with the experience of our people in the post-war years, combining close study of individuals with a clear historical structure ...[a series] with a broad base and interlinked sections' (Life Rarely Tells pp. 805-807). Lindsay has indicated that each work was also intended to be 'complete in itself'. The second work in the series, Rising Tide : A Novel of the British Way (1953), contains the characters Phyl, Jeff, Bette and Harry whose 'earlier history' appears in Betrayed Spring.
