Peter Craven canvasses potential Australian candidates for the Nobel Prize for Literature. His list of possibilities includes David Malouf, Shirley Hazzard, Gerald Murnane, Tim Winton, Murray Bail, Elizabeth Jolley, Tom Keneally and Peter Carey. Eventually, though, Craven suggests that 'at the end of the day there is only one Australian writer who is a good bet for a Nobel prize in the immediate future, and that's Les Murray, the nation's most famous poet.'
