'Willa Morton [...] is the unselfish slave of her mean but wealthy parents and many brothers and sisters. Willa is saved by Mr and Mrs Morton's convenient deaths and a romance with the son of a drunken station bookkeeper' (Oxford Companion to Australian Children's Literature 277).
