AbstractHistoryArchive Description

'While M'Kato, who has been mutilated and tortured by a white man, waits impassively beside the Little River for his vengeance, the mission and the steamboat arrive, traders, adventurers and courtezans settle, and a town grows. Religion and superstition, lust and business soon become inextricably mixed in a clearing of what had once been impenetrable forest.' (Cover)

Notes

  • 'The Black God is a record of vengeance against a white man, exacted by a native (of Zulu extraction) who wanders from south-east Africa and settles on the Congo. There are accounts of Roman Catholic and Baptist missionaries, traders, tavern-keepers, coutesans and native magicians.' Australian Literature from its Beginnings to 1935 (1940).
