First appeared in Tegg's Monthly Magazine in 1836 with the author's name indicated by the Greek letter Omega. Hand-written notes on the Mitchell Library copy of Tegg's Monthly Magazine attribute this work to 'Mr. W. Kerr'. Note that Victor Crittenden (q.v.) attributes this work to John Lang (q.v.).

'Enough has been said and written in the colony on the evil effects which the present system of female emigration has entailed on its unfortunate victims, as well as on the colony generally. Yet it would ill become us to pass the subject without expressing our detestation of the system pursued, and the heartless cruelty with has been practiced on these unfortunate girls, who, deluded by false representations, have been sent unprotected among us. Since this system first began to shower its benefits on us, incidents such as those contained in the following tale have become so familiar among us, so much an affair of daily occurrence, as to create little or no surprise. As the relation of such events, however, will form a useful lesson, as well as serve to exemplify some of the evils of the system of female emigration, we have given it our insertion.' - accompanying editorial note, Tegg's Monthly Magazine, March 1836 (p.14).
