Australian Poetry, single work review
— Review of How He Died and Other Poems John Farrell , 1887 selected work poetry ;
'...we think that, on the whole, every appreciative and sensitive reader will at once admit that there is unquestionably true poetry in this book; that there is much originality - ...and that there are many poems of rare and touching beauty. And it may also be said that the poems are racy of the soil. It is not verse which may be written without reference to country or climate, or the occupations of the people, or the peculiarities of character springing from these - verse which might appear in the poet's corner of any journal anywhere, and which would take hold of any reader. It is on the contrary peculiarly Australian. It is in this respect alone perhaps as striking as anything that has been written in or of this country...'
