At a park, a little girl named Sheelah approaches a very glum-looking man. The man is despairing because he feels he is a failure. Sheelah talks to him about faith, hope, and souls. They say a Hail Mary. The man finds his mood is much improved.

Mother's Letter, single work short story children's
Bride Reilly is away from her family and living in the city. She works all day and goes out each night. When a package containing an Easter gift and letter arrives from her mother, Bride is forced to reflect on her city lifestyle. She has fallen in love with a man who is 'not free to marry her - except in the eyes of the law. Before God, he was still - despite "incompatibility of temper" - the husband of another woman, and would be until death parted them' (10). What will Bride do?

Faith's Candles, single work short story children's
Ignatius, who was raised a Roman Catholic, is away fighting in World War I. But the 'light of faith' (12) has died down in his soul. His mother fears that he will die in battle without having been to confession. She lights candles, and prays for her son.
