The Oxford Companion to Australian Children's Literature says the novel is 'set in the Caroline Islands among the lost idols of the Okapites'. Miller and Macartney say it 'describes an ancient Pacific island temple dedicated to the moon god; with many adventures and references to the superstitions and ceremonies of the natives; has affinities with J.F.Dwyer's White Waterfall (1912).'
