AbstractHistoryArchive Description

A cross-media collaboration between Singapore, Japan and Australia artists based on war-crimes trial records, survivors' accounts of the death march in Borneo at the end of World War II. It metaphorises the experiences of war and brutality as a journey into the heart of darkness.

Production Details

  • The Sandakan Threnody for solo tenor, chorus and orchestra, was first performed by the Adelaide Chamber Singers and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, 2002.
  • World premiere by TheatreWorks, Singapore of this cross-cultural multi-media production, involving Australian, Japanese and Singaporean composers, filmmakers, theatre directors and actors at the Victoria Theatre, Singapore Arts Festival, 18 - 20 Jun 2004 and at the Suncorp Theatre, Energex Brisbane Festival, 16 - 18 September 2004. Director: Ong Keng Sen
