In the light of hoax claims against Norma Khouri's Forbidden Love, Masson draws attention to the trend of the late 1990s to steer away from the publishing of fiction and turn instead towards 'reality' writing. Masson suggests that publishers sought life stories that portrayed 'things that might in a novel be seen either as too bizarre to include or politically incorrect.'
